We are glad to have invited our member Mr. Jonathan LAU to share his experience in applying Chairwork in Motivational Interviewing (MI), followed by Dr. Paul KONG’s sharing of his exploration and reflection on how MI skills can be integrated in a broader range of treatment methods and contexts.

Part I: Topic sharing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered approach to therapy that aims to help clients resolve their ambivalence towards change. Chairwork can be a valuable tool in MI to facilitate the interviewing process and increase the success of resolving ambivalence in clients. The technique involves creating an imaginary dialogue between the client and an imagined person or situation related to their ambivalence towards change. By doing so, the client can explore and express their emotions, thoughts, and feelings in a non-judgmental space, leading to increased self-awareness and identification of new strategies for change. Chairwork can also help clients to gain new perspectives on their situation, leading to increased motivation and commitment towards change. Through this forum, we aim to explore the rationale and strategies for using the Chairwork in MI and to also share our experiences and insights with others in the field about how treatment techniques and clinical skills can be integrated together.

Part II: Work sample discussion

We shall listen to a work sample (in Cantonese) shared by Mr. Jonathan LAU. (No recording is allowed to maintain confidentiality). A group discussion will be conducted.
